Iyyampalayam

Iyyampalayam is a Panchayat town located in Dindigul district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The ancient Muthalamman Temple is one of the most important pilgrimage centres here.

Iyyampalayam is located in Dindigul district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is a panchayat town situated at the of the hill station, Kodaikanal. A village by the same name also exists in Erode district and Trichy district. The Marudanadi dam has been built close to the town. The water from the dam helps in irrigating almost 3,000 acres of land. The town chiefly produces coconuts and mangoes.

According to the Indian census report of 2001 Iyyampalayam had a population of 12,131. The males constitute 50% of the population. The town has an average literacy rate of 62%. It is higher than the national average of 59.5%. The male literacy rate is 56% and the female literacy rate is 44%. 11% of the population is under 6 years of age in Iyyampalayam.

Pilgrimage Places in Iyyampalayam
Iyyampalayam is an important pilgrimage centre visited by many devotees. The ancient Muthalamman Temple is one of the most important shrines located here. Every year the temple celebrates a festival on a grand scale. The festival is leaded by the family members of Alappa Gowder. The festival is celebrated on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The most important day is thought to be Wednesday. On this day devotees carry sloth cloth for the goddess. The old clothes are replaced and the goddess is decked with new gorgeous clothes in the temple house of Alappa Gowder. The main festival begins when the idol is then taken to the temple. Another vital festival of Iyyampalayam is the Sadayandi swami petti festival. Apart from this the Periya Ayyanar temple located on the bank of Marudanadi River is another pilgrimage centre in Iyyampalayam. Pongal is another important festival celebrated here in the month of January.
