Happy Valley Tea EstateHappy Valley Tea Estate is a tea cultivation ground in Darjeeling district, West Bengal. It is the closest estate to Darjeeling town and tourists often visit the garden to enjoy the scenic beauty and scene of tea cultivation. This tea estate lies 3 km away from Darjeeling town and is situated below the Hill Cart Road in the Darjeeling East Valley. The tea estate is spread over 177 hectares and 2,100 meters. It produces world class Darjeeling Tea and is one of the oldest and most renowned tea estates in Darjeeling. The months of March to May are the busiest time here as plucking and processing are done in this time period.

History of Happy Valley Tea Estate
The tea estate was established in the year 1854 by David Wilson, an Englishman, who had named the garden Wilson Tea Estate and by 1860 had started cultivation of tea. In 1903, Happy Valley Tea Estate was taken over by an Indian, Tarapada Banerjee, who was an aristocrat from Hooghly. In 1929, Tarapada Banerjee bought the Windsor tea estate and merged the two estates and gave the name Happy Valley Tea Estate to it.

The bushes in the Happy Valley Tea Estate are very old; some are even 150 years old. The history of this tea garden dates back to more than 80 years. Very few re-plantations in this estate have been done in the recent years.

The Happy Valley Tea Estate is located towards the North of the Darjeeling town and whilst walking to this place, one cannot possibly miss the magnificent view of the Mt. Kanchenjunga. Happy Valley Tea Estate is just 3 km from Chowk Bazaar of Darjeeling. One can take a car from there to reach the tea estate via Lebong Cart Road. The estate can also be reached from Chowk Bazaar via Lochnagar Road.
