Great Buddha statue is one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimages located in Bodh Gaya, Bihar. The statue is 64 feet of height and the Buddha is exhibited in meditating pose or dhyan mudra seated on a lotus in open air. Possibly, it is the largest Buddha statue of India, the foundation stone of which was laid in the year 1982. The statue is situated beside the Mahabodhi Temple of Bodh Gaya, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Great Buddha statue took seven years to be built with 12,000 masons and it was consecrated in 18th November 1989 by the 14th Dalai Lama. The statue, a symbol of peace and spirituality in Buddhism, is made out of sandstone blocks and red granite. The statue is hollow and is said to contain some 20,000 bronze Buddhas.
