Located in the Mahisadal Block of East Midnapore District, the village of Geonkhali is at a distance of 130 km away to the south of Kolkata. Geonkhali is situated at the confluence of the rivers Hooghly, Rupnarayan and Damodar and appears to be like a sea because of its wideness. The confluence of these rivers is a sight to behold and makes Geonkhali a spectacular place. The riverfront is flanked with a green wilderness of babala, sirish, akashmoni and mango trees.
Nearby Places of Attraction in Geonkhali
Besides the rivers, there are other tourist attractions in the Geonkhali area like the Mahisadal palace, the Radha Krishna Temple at Mahisadal and the nearby town of Kolaghat. The village of Geonkhali is also connected to its neighbouring villages of Gadiara and Nurpur by regular launch services. Gadiara is a popular picnic and daytrip spot for locals and tourists alike. It also has an ancient fort known as the Fort Mornington built by Major Robert Clive. During the floods of 1942, the fort was severely damaged.
A number of water treatment plants are housed in Geonkhali for supplying fresh water to Haldia, as the water of the place is saline in nature. Haldia is not very far away from Geonkhali. But the route is a bit tricky. There is quite a distance between villages, where there are no concrete roads. A lake near the water treatment plant and a small park are also situated here which provides a refreshing time to the visitors. Seagulls, cranes and various other phyla of birds can be seen at the front of the river. River cruises can be easily arranged on country boats for a small amount.

The village of Geonkhali can be reached via roadways from Nurpur, which is at a distance of 52 km. One can reach Geonkhali from the village of Nurpur by catching a ride on a ferry.
