Gangaikondan

Gangaikondan is a town in Tirunelveli district of the southern state of India, Tamil Nadu. Located in the eastern side of the Tirunelveli district, Gangaikondan is about 16 km. from the district headquarters at Tirunelveli. NH 7 passes through Gangaikondan. Gangaikondan is well connected by roadways from Tirunelveli and Kovilpatti.

The nearest airport is at Tuticorn and the Tirunelveli Junction Railway Station is the nearest railway junction. Talaiyuthu Railway Station is the nearest railhead. Talaiyuthu is situated at a distance of 9 km. in the southeast and Kayatar is 11 km. in the north. As Gangaikondan lies close to the merging point of Chittar (major tributary of the river Tamiraparani) with the Tamiraparani River it has a rich source of underground water. It is located between 8.85° North latitude and 77.78° East longitude at a height of 47 metres (154 feet) above mean sea level.

According to the 2001 census report, Gangaikondan had a population of 10,254 inhabitants. Males constitute 52% of the population and females constitute 48% of the population. In Gangaikondan, 13% of the population is less than six years of age. Gangaikondan has an average literacy rate of 73% which is higher than the national average literacy rate of 59.5%. The male literacy rate is 81% and the female literacy rate is 65%.

Dotted with several temples in the vicinity some of the important ones are Krishnapuram Temple at Krishnapuram, Shiva Temple at Cheranmadevi and Kailasanathar Temple at Brahmadesam, which can be visited.
