Flora and Fauna of Jayamangali Blackbuck Conservation Reserve includes the blackbucks and more than nineteen species of mammals and belonging to 11 families.
Jayamangali Blackbuck Conservation Reserve is located in Tumkur District of Karnataka. It lies in the protected part of Deccan plateau. Near the Jayamangali Blackbuck Conservation Reserve there is a small village called Maidenahalli situated in in Madhugiri Taluk. This small hamlet is situated in Madhugiri Taluk, at the north eastern corner of Tumkur district of Karnataka.
The area of Jayamangali Blackbuck Conservation Reserve occupies 798 acre patch of grassland with Eucalyptus and Acacia auriculiformis. Jayamangali Reserve for Conservation has the largest contiguous population of Blackbuck (Antilope cervicapra) in Karnataka, apart from Ranibennur Blackbuck Sanctuary, which is located just near to this reserve forest.
Jayamangali Blackbuck Conservation Reserve, which was formerly known as Maidanahalli Blackbuck Conservation Reserve has the second largest contiguous population of Blackbuck in Karnataka. The Forest Department of Karnataka along with the WANC members conducted a joint study in the area on 15 November to 16 November 1997. At that time the population of Jayamangali Blackbuck Conservation Reserve was 408 Blackbucks. Subsequently on 1st and 2nd October 2002, the population of blackbuck and other wild animals in Jayamangali Blackbuck Conservation Reserve was recorded as 600.
In total, 19 species of mammals in Jayamangali Blackbuck Conservation Reserve belonging to 11 families have been recorded in the area, including the endangered Blackbuck. Apart from the blackbucks, other mammals present in the area include wolf, Bonnet macaque, Jungle cat, Small Indian Civet, Indian Gray Mongoose, two species of bats, and six species of rodents.
There are about 125 species of birds in Jayamangali Blackbuck Conservation Reserve. The birds are belonging to 37 families have been recorded in the area, of which 22 are migratory birds. They come from different parts of the world like Russia, Siberia and Turkey. As expected of grasslands, the area of Jayamangali Blackbuck Conservation Reserve is rich in ground birds, shrikes, larks and raptors. The Indian Courser (Cursorius coromandelicus) and Painted Sandgrouse (Pterocles indicus indicus) have been seen in the terrain of Jayamangali Blackbuck Conservation Reserve.
