The Fakim Wildlife Sanctuary spreads over an area of 642 hectares and is close to the India- Myanmar border in the Pungro circle headquarter in the state of Nagaland. It is one of the popular wildlife sanctuaries of Nagaland and is home to a variety of wildlife such as tigers, hoolock gibbons and the tragopan pheasants.
Overview of Fakim Wildlife Sanctuary
Established in 1983, the Fakim Wildlife Sanctuary is home to a great diversity of flora and fauna including many rare species of both. Some of the prominent trees found in the sanctuary include Sasi, Kachnar, Alder, Uriam, Nahor, Hoolock, Gamari, Amari, Oaks, Khasi Pine, Bogipoma, Bonsum and many more. With over a dozen species of ferns grown here along with several varieties of orchids, rhododendrons in the sanctuary are one of the notable features. Canes and bamboos are also found here in abundance along with Dalchini and Tejpata which can be spotted scattered throughout the sanctuary. Heavy rainfall in this region further supports the growth of numerous species of shrubs. Several medicinal herbs also grow in the Fakim Wildlife Sanctuary.
The sanctuary also shelters a rich variety of fauna among which the common ones include Slender Loris, Wild Boar, Barking Deer, Sambar, Bison, Himalayan Bear, Jungle Cat, Panther, Hoolock Gibbons, Tiger etc. A number of gorgeous birds are also the inhabitants of the sanctuary such as Doves, Green Pigeon, Jungle Fowl, Grey Pheasant, Tragopan Pheasant and others.
Visiting Information on Fakim Wildlife Sanctuary
Tourists visiting the Fakim Wildlife Sanctuary require a special permission from the State Forest Department for visiting the sanctuary. The Dimapur Airport and railway station are the closest from the wildlife sanctuary.
