Honours and Awards in Indian Army are given for safeguarding the nation from terrorists and insurgents. The officer was earlier awarded medals for exhibiting gallantry and leadership in counter-terrorist operations. Honours and Awards in Indian Army during Ancient Period
The personal decorations used by the ancients as honorary awards for military achievements were crowns and wreaths, and ornaments for the neck and arm. Fillets or ribbons were also worn around the head as emblems of victory.
The "Grant of Land" and a share of the "War Booty" was another method of recognizing military achievements. This system has been prevalent in India since Vedic period and is in practice even today. Land is allotted by some state governments to the gallantry award winners.
With the passage of time, it became increasingly difficult to grant land for distinguished services because of the paucity of available land. Some of the kings therefore, attempted to introduce a series of orders, decorations and Medals not only to recognise the brave deeds of the subjects but also to distinguish them from their peers.
Honours and Awards in Indian Army during British Period
During the British times, there were more than 550 states in India governed by Nawabs, Rajas and Maharajas. Almost all the rulers of these states have instituted various orders, decorations and medals in recognition of the brave deeds and outstanding services of their subjects. The East India Company not only brought in British customs on medals but also introduced some new concepts.
