Edappadi

Edappadi is the sub divisional headquarters located in the Salem district of the southern state of India, Tamil Nadu. It is situated in the western part of the district and is a prominent town in the district. Salem is situated at a distance of 36 km. from Edappadi and in the northeast at a distance of 34 km. is Erode. The other important places in the vicinity are Kurichi, Ammapettai, Nerinjippettai, Jalakandapuram, Pulampatti, Talavapatti, Akkammapettai and Sankaridrug. The nearest airport is at Salem and the nearest railway stations are the Salem Junction Railway Station and the Erode Junction Railway Station.

Edappadi was once famous for its thriving power loom industry. The other modes of income are agriculture, textile power loom and foundry. The place also consists of rare radioactive minerals according to a research done by geologists.

As per the 2001 Indian census report, Edappadi had a population of 48,804 inhabitants. Males constitute 52% of the population and females constitute 48% of the population. In Edappadi, 11% of the population is less than six years of age. Edappadi has an average literacy rate of 62% that is higher than the national average literacy rate of 59.5%. The male literacy rate is 71% and the female literacy rate is 51%.

The Cauvery River flows through the town. It is also surrounds by many lakes like Periyayeri, Chettiyeri, Punkayeri and RettipattiYeri. It is also dotted with numerous temples; the important temples in the town are Bhavani Sangameshwarar Temple, Shri Kailasanathar Temple at Taramangalam. The Mettur Dam and Sankakiri Fort are tourist attractions in the vicinity.
