Situated on the northern banks of the Brahmaputra River in the foothills of the Chandra Bharati Hills, the Doul Govinda Temple is one of the most important temples in Guwahati. The temple is located in Kamrup in the state of Assam and is mainly devoted to Lord Krishna. Within the temple premises, there is also a Namghar, which is an Assamese place of worship.
History of Doul Govinda Temple
As per legends, it is believed that the idol of Lord Krishna which is consecrated at the sanctum sanctorum was found miraculously. Several stories also suggest that the idol of Lord Krishna was discovered by the late Ganga Ram Barooah from a place called Sandhyasar near Nalbari. The first structure of the Doul Govinda Temple was erected more than 150 years ago but it was again renovated in the year 1966.

The Doul Govinda Temple is one of the popular temples for Lord Krishna in the north eastern region. Devotees throng to this place during special festivities and occasions like Holi, which is celebrated for a span of almost 5 days. Another festival which is celebrated with equal enthusiasm is the Hindu festival of Janmashtami, which celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna. The temple also celebrates the Maghi Purnima festival that also attracts tourists and devotees from all over.
Visiting Information on Doul Govinda Temple
The Guwahati railway station is the closest at a distance of almost 24 km from the temple and the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport is the nearest at about 27 km away from the Doul Govinda Temple. But the easiest and fastest route to reach the temple is generally via ferries, which are available from Fancy Bazaar Ferry Ghat to Rajaduar.
