Devgad Fort is situated at Devgad town in the Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra. The fort is situated just at the confluence of Arabian Sea and Devgad Creek which gives an amazing view of the sea. Since the fort is surrounded by water from all side, so it is also nicknamed as "Janjire Devgad". The word "Janjire" means "Island" in Arabic language.
Now, only a few strips of the fortifications remain. There is a Ganesh temple, three old cannons and a 15 m high Lighthouse situated inside the fort. The walls and the structures of this fort are still intact and in good condition.
History of Devgad Fort
Placed strategically on a narrow strip of land jutting into the Arabian Sea, Devgad Fort was constructed by Kanhoji Angre, the brave warrior of Konkan coast, in 1705 A.D. on a highland of the sea port of Devgad. It was used as a surveillance center. It was attacked by the British Naval Battalion in charge of Commander Walter Brown. After changing many hands, this 120 acre fort finally came under the British in 1818 AD. The lighthouse present in the Devgad Fort was built in the year 1915 for the harbour and the beach.

Devgad town got its name from this legendary fort. The place is well known for the magical and mystical sunset that can be witnessed from the fort. Devgad is also famous worldwide for the production of Alphonso mangoes.
