Dergonya Nachani, Assamese Folk DanceDergonya Nachani is a folk dance performed in the Assam state of India. This traditional dance is a form of a religious dance practiced by dancers in the front of a temple. In a village called Deragon in Jorhat, there are many female dancers who reside in the temple premises and perform there till the present days.

Dance Pattern of Dergonya Nachani:
The dance pattern of Dergonya Nachani is almost similar to that of the Bihu dances. These dances are devoid of any vulgarity and are solely based on religious matters.

Performance of Dergonya Nachani in Temples:
There is a temple called `Hazar Haya Griva Mandir` where Dergonya Nachani is practiced. This temple is located in Nati Hazus which is a place situated near Nalbari in Kamrup district. Here in the temple premises, the dancers or Natis like Devadasis (Devadasi is a Sanskrit term meaning female servant of God) are kept who perform these dances during various ceremonies. Even in the Kamakhya temple at Guwahati such Devadasis still exist.

Dancing in the temple is their sole profession hence they reside in the temple. As they do not opt for any other profession they are aided from the temple fund. Even the villagers from the neighbouring places support them with alms.

These Devdasis perform dance in an open space in front of a temple. These dances are completely religious. These dancers follow celibacy throughout their life hence if any Devdasi ever marry they are not allowed to dance in the temple and even have to depart from the locality.
