Debaddhani Festival

The Debaddhani Festival is in honour of the goddess of snake, Goddess Manasa.

Held at the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati in the state of Assam, the Debaddhani Festival is dedicated to Goddess Manasa, the Hindu Goddess of serpents. It is a 3 day long festival, during which ritualistic offerings are made to the goddess without any of her idol representation.

One of the strange rituals occur here is the walk of the devotees in a trance like state on sharp swords. Other than this, other modes of entertainment are provided by the folk dancers known as "deodha", who perform the folk dance of Deodhani during this festive occasion.

Etymology of Debaddhani Festival
The festival is called "Debaddhani" because of all the loud sounds the musical instruments produce during the festivities.
