Dantewada, ChattisgarhDantewada is a town which is situated in the district of Dantewada in the Eastern Indian state of Chhattisgarh. It is also referred to as `Dantewara` and serves as the administrative headquarters of Dantewada district. The town of Dantewada is also a `nagar panchayat`. Named after Goddess Danteshwari, who is the main deity of the local Danteshwari Temple, Dantewada is based between 18.9000 degree North and 81.3500 degree East latitude and longitude. Danteshwari Temple is based about 80 km from the tehsil of Jagdalpur. This temple is revered as one of the sacred 51 `Shakti Peethas` of the country.

Dantewada town preserves a rich cultural heritage since pre-historic ages, when this Indian town was termed as Dantawali and Tarlapal. Several stone carvings present in this town reveal that Dantewada was referred to by the two names mentioned above. Besides the Danteshwari Temple, Dantewada also shelters the temple of Bhairm Baba, which is a pilgrimage spot of historical significance.

Dantewada town is located at an altitude of 351 m above sea level. The tehsil of Dantewada comprises of 31 `Gram Panchayats`, which supervise some villages. As per the records of 2001 census, the total population of Dantewada is about 6,632. There are nearly 53 percent of males as well as 47 percent females in this place. Dantewada has a male literacy of 70 percent and female literacy of about 61 percent. Languages like Chattisgarhi language and Hindi language are the most commonly used languages in the town of Dantewada.
