Churulia is a village situated in the district of Bardhaman, in the Asansol subdivision, along the southern bank of Ajay River. The village comprises of wavy laterite soil. Previously, the region was densely forested and was populated with marauders and plunderers. The clearing of forest was done after the discovery of coal in the surrounding areas which led to the industrialization of the region. Churulia is geographically the heart of Raniganj Coalfield, a well known coal mining area in India.
Churulia is famous for being the birth place of eminent Bengali poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. It is also the resting place of Pramila Devi who was the wife of the poet. The village houses the Nazrul Academy where personal belongings, medallions and manuscripts of Kazi Nazrul Islam are preserved. It was established in the year 1958. Near the academy, there is college which has also been named after the poet. Every year, during the birth anniversary of the poet, a weeklong festival is celebrated which is attended by leading literary and cultural personalities from India as well as Bangladesh. Churulia is also believed to host a fort in ancient past which fell of during the period of Afghan chieftain Sher Khan in 16th century. The ruins of the fort are believed to be contained in a mound in the village. A mosque is also situated in the village which is an excellent representation of beautiful Islamic architecture.
