After the Port of Mumbai , the Chennai Port is the second largest Port in India.Not only a major travel port it has also been a major container port.An expansion programme of the port has been launched and the port can be seen as the reason for the economic growth of Tamil Nadu. The port is situated in the Coromandel coast in South-East India and has more than 100 years of tradition.
The port is advantageously located and well connected with major parts of the world for that today it became the hub port on the Indian subcontinent. Through advancement of the four corner stones of the port as it was committed to efficiency, will see much growth in the years to come. A continuous modernization process is going on to make the services resourceful at minimum cost.
Sir Francis Spring took the initiative of major improvement of the port from 1905-1919. From 1881 to 1945 the Chennai port handled cargo around 0.5 million tones to 1 million tones.The Chennai Port has three docks. They are the Dr.Ambedkar Dock, Jawahar Dock, Bharathi Dock and Container Terminal. These docks have twenty one alongside berths.The Chennai Port handles a variety of cargo which includes iron ore, coal, granite, fertilizers, petroleum products, containers, automobiles and several other types of general cargo items.The increase in container traffic has led to the planning of another container terminal the management of this was taken by Pand O Port of Australia.It enjoys a quay length of 885 metre.The Chennai Port Trust started its rebuilding action in 1881 and celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2006.
