Legend of Chayavaneashwara Temple
Chayavaneashwara Temple is associated with an ancient legend. Iyarpagai Nayanar, one of the sixty-three Nayanmars or Shaivite saints of the South was a great devotee. He was a wealthy man who spent his money constructing temples and serving and feeding poor people and saints. According to the legend once an old man approached him and requested to send his wife to him as a gift. Iyarpagai Nayanar immediately sent his men for the job and thus fulfilled the desire of the old man. However, this incident created much commotion among his relatives. They did not appreciate his act and the gift. Iyarpagai Nayanar asked his wife to follow the path of the saint that his wife followed. Pleased with his devotion the old man transformed into Lord Shiva and told him that he was testing his loyalty. He praised the Nayanar for his unconditional love and devotion for the Shaivite saints and blessed him with liberation.
