Chayavaneashwara Temple, Tamil NaduThe Chayavaneswara temple is a famous temple located in Chayavanam (Chaikadu) almost two miles from Tiruvengadu in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The temple is a mile away from the confluence of Kaveri River with the sea, Kaveri- Patnam. The ancient Chayavaneswara temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is worshipped as Chayavaneswarar. Devotees from far off places visit the temple to offer their prayers at the feet of the Lord and receive his blessings. As per Hindu customary rites taking a bath at the confluence of the river is regarded as holy.

Legend of Chayavaneashwara Temple
Chayavaneashwara Temple is associated with an ancient legend. Iyarpagai Nayanar, one of the sixty-three Nayanmars or Shaivite saints of the South was a great devotee. He was a wealthy man who spent his money constructing temples and serving and feeding poor people and saints. According to the legend once an old man approached him and requested to send his wife to him as a gift. Iyarpagai Nayanar immediately sent his men for the job and thus fulfilled the desire of the old man. However, this incident created much commotion among his relatives. They did not appreciate his act and the gift. Iyarpagai Nayanar asked his wife to follow the path of the saint that his wife followed. Pleased with his devotion the old man transformed into Lord Shiva and told him that he was testing his loyalty. He praised the Nayanar for his unconditional love and devotion for the Shaivite saints and blessed him with liberation.

Chayavaneashwara Temple is well connected with all modes of transport. The nearest airport is located in Chennai. There are many trains available from Shiyali, Vaitheeswaran Koil, Semponnar Koil and Akkur railway stations located on the Chennai- Mayavaram line. Bus and other private cars are also easily available to reach the temple.
