Birsinghpur, Umaria District of Madhya PradeshThe town of Birsinghpur, whose exact geographical location is 23°22`12"N and 81°2`59"E, lies in the Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh in India. The statistical figures of the town, as revealed by the 2001 census, record a population of 12,334. Out of these, 53% are males, 47% are females and 18% are children below six years. Literate people amount to 56% of the total population of the town. Compared to the national average of 59.5%, it is slightly lower. Male literacy is 67% while 43% of the females are literate.

Birsinghpur derives its name from the 19th century king Veer Singh who once ruled there. Other commonly used names for the town are Pali or Birsinghpur -Pali. The town falls on the road from Umaria to Shahdol, at a distanace of about 36 km. from Umaria. Another important road connects Birsinghpur to Mandla. The railway station at Birsinghpur is known as the Pali-Birsinghpur station. Closeby there is a temple dedicated to Birasinidevi. Probably the worshipped idol is Goddess Kali in a different form, embodied here as a skeleton Goddess, but with her mouth closed. Fairs are held every year in the months of October and March, on the occasion of Navaratri, in the vicinity of this temple. There is also a shiva temple having a `shiv linga` (a rock phallic symbol of Lord Shiva), where devotees regularly come to have darshan and offer prayers. The Sanjay Gandhi Thermal Power Station financed by the Madhya Pradesh Power Generating Company Limited is located in this town.
