Birati is an urban area, located and administered in the North Dumdum municipality area. This municipality area is located under the North 24 Parganas district in the state of West Bengal. Birati has the hidden gems. It has the abandoned army barracks that were used by the soldiers of Indian British Armies before 1857.

Birati is located at the eastern part of Kolkata. It is located beside the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport at Dum Dum. It is considered to be a part of Greater Kolkata or KMA, for which KMDA has planned for the development.

Birati got its administrative under Dum Dum municipality. Dumdum junction also enables residents to travel by the metro railways.
History of Birati
The history of Birati traces from the army rule of British East India Company. The most popular thesis for the emergence of the name `Birati` is the military forces used to take a rest in this place during their movements and for that place was named as biroti which means `rest` in Bengali. Over time the name changed to `Birati`. The armies of the British East India Company and later the British Government in India have got its resting place in the military barracks.

Birati is bounded by the Jessore Road in the East, Nimta in the West, New Barrackpur in the North and Durganagar in the South.

There are also a number of government and privately run primary and Kindergarten schools like Sudhindranath Sishu Vidhyalaya, Uttarayan Sishu Vidyayatan and many more. Mrinalini Dutta Mahavidyapith is the only college in Birati.
Visiting Information
Birati is on the Sealdah and Bangaon railway line which connects Birati with Barasat, Habra, Basirhat, Hasnabad, Bongaon and Kolkata. It is very close to and is near to the NSCB INTL Airport. Belghoria Expressway or popularly called Delhi Road connects Jessore Road (NH-34) at east near Airport and NH-6/NH-2 at west near Bally at Hoogly District.
