Bhalachandra is one of the 12 forms of Lord Ganesha. Ganesha is one of the most venerated gods in Hinduism. Bhalachandra, the eleventh form of the Lord, means the one who has the crescent moon over his head. Lord Shiva is also known as Bhalachandra or Bhalcandra as a crescent moon adorns His head. The Indian Puranas state that Ganesha creates an atmosphere of happiness and peace throughout the world by keeping the moon on His head. A devotee who possesses wisdom and a thoughtful mind can perform his duties in a more efficient manner. Thus, a person with a quiet and peaceful mind will achieve success in every task.
Another legend related to the form of Bhalachandra states that Chandra or the moon is the king of Brahmins, who completely knows Lord Brahma. Hence by placing the moon over His head, Lord Ganesha has achieved complete knowledge of Brahma. Thus, He is worshipped first before any auspicious ritual or ceremony.
