The city of Bijapur, which is at a distance of 530 km northwest of Bangalore, is the administrative headquarters of the district. Bijapur is renowned for the great monuments of historical significance constructed during the Adil Shahi dynasty. The places to visit in the district are Ibrahim Rauza, Jumma Masjid, Malik e Maidan, Upri Buruj, Chand Bawdi, Asar Mahal, Gagan Mahal, Barakaman, Anand Mahal, Jod Gumbaz, Sat Manzil and Jal Manzil.

As per the 2001 India census, the town of Basavana Bagevadi has a population of 28,582. Males make up 51% of the population and females amount to 49%. Basavana Bagevadi has an average literacy rate of 53%, lower than the nationwide standard of 59.5%. 61% of the males and 39% of the females` are literate. 16% of the population is children less than 6 years of age.
