Ban Jhakri Falls is 100 feet long waterfall and the force of the fall is very intense. This waterfall is about 4 kilometres from Gangtok on the way to Ranka Monastery. It is a popular tourist destination. The word "Ban" literally means forest or jungle and "Jhakri" means healer. The place remains quite crowded during the peak tourist season.
Myths about Ban Jhakri Falls
A Ban Jhakri is a mythical man and has been talked about only in folktales within the Nepali Community in Sikkim. He was the first Jhakri or Shaman to acquire the power of mastering the evil spirits from the Gods. According to these folktales, Ban Jhakri used to dwell in the forest and lived in rock caves worshiping spirits. He used to take small children to forests to teach Banjhakri ways. After the training, the boys themselves became "Jhakris" being able to cure anybody affected by evil spirits. While the male "Jhakris" always protected human beings, the folklore says that their wives "Jhakrinis" were evil spirits themselves and would eat up human beings.
Ban Jhakri Falls Energy Park
Ban Jhakri Falls Energy Park is a theme park located in the midst of lush green valley that is spread over nearly 2 acres of land. It is surrounded by lush green trees and the resonating sound of the waterfall adds to the charm and appeal of the place. Unique floral species are a visual treat all over the park. There are also a few resting places, a small swimming pool with a dragon. The park is lit by solar-powered lamps. The place is further adorned with several statues of Ban Jhakri, Lyam Lymay, Mangpas and Lepcha ancestors. The entire park is themed on Shaman culture with Sikkimese architecture visible all across the park.
