Avantipur is one of the ancient sights of Jammu and Kashmir which is often visited by the tourists. The area includes some ruins of the ancient temples which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The place is mainly associated with the period of Pandavas. It is considered to be the ancient capital of Kashmir which was established by the Hindu ruler Avanti Varman. Dated back to the period of 855- 883 AD this place is popularly known for the Shiv Mandir of ancient India which represent the ancient art and architecture of India.
The site of Avantipur has two very significant shrines of ancient Hindu Gods. While the main temple has the deity of Lord Shiva, the deity of Lord Vishnu is located in Avantiswami which is half a mile away from Avantipuram. Both reflect the significance of the place in ancient India. The temples of the Avantipur represent the ancient stone architecture which has now turned into ruins. The temple is decorated with the ancient stone sculpture of both male and female figures. Along with main shrine the temple also includes the deities of few subsidiary gods and goddesses which are assembled in the temple. The sculptures are mainly found either on the entrance wall or on the flank walls of staircases. These temples mainly rested on a flat block. This was a major part of architecture in ancient India. The temple of Avantiswami which is dedicated to Lord Vishnu is better preserved which clearly reflect the art and architecture of ancient India.
Thus the sight continues to remain an important part of tourism in Jammu and Kashmir. With its legends it attracts a large variety of tourists even today. Located at the outskirts of Kashmir valley this also provides an opportunity for photography.
