Attoor is located in Kanyakumari District in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is a panchayat town located at a distance of almost 5 kms on the north eastern side of Marthandam and 25 kms on the north western side of Nagercoil.
Economy of Attoor
Attoor has two cashew nut companies that provide employment to several residents. Many farm lands located in the town has now been converted into rubber gardens. Attoor experiences a tropical climate. It receives rainfall twice in a year.
Educational Institutions of Attoor
Attoor has established few schools and colleges for imparting education. There are two engineering colleges, one Homeopathic Studies College and one B. Ed College in the town. Another important college Marthandam College of Engineering is located in Kuttaikuzhi almost 1 km away from Attoor.
Pilgrimage Centres in Attoor
Attoor has few temples visited by devotees from different places. A Jain temple is located in Chitharal at a distance of almost 3 kms. The local people have named it as Malai Kovil which means a temple located on a hill. According to the scriptures of Jainism the hill is known as Thiruchanathumalai. The exterior walls of the temple have been decorated with Jain images. Presently the temple has been taken by the Hindus. They have installed an idol of Devi in the temple. Another old temple almost 1000 years old, dedicated to Lord Shiva is situated at a distance of almost 1 km from Attoor. The temple is adorned with a beautiful pond 500 mts in length and 380 mts in breadth. Another shrine known as Sri Adikesavaperumal Temple is situated 1 km away from Attoor.
