Asin Thottumkal, born on October 26, 1985, is an award-winning Indian film actress from the state of Kerala. Asin Thottumkal made her acting debut in Sathyan Anthikkad`s Narendra Makan Jayakanthan Vaka (2001) and did her first commercial success with Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi in 2003. Asin Thottumkal won a Filmfare Award for the Best Telugu Actress for the film.

After completing a number of critically and commercially successful films, Asin Thottumkal received her second South Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her performance in her second Tamil film, Ghajini (2005). She was the lead female character in two consecutive top grosser - Ghajini (2005) which is her biggest commercial success and the action comedy Varalaru (2006). Thus, Asin Thottumkal has established herself as one of the most prominent leading actresses of South Indian cinema. More recently, Asin Thottumkal made her début in Bollywood, with the film Ghajini, opposite Aamir Khan, which is the remake of its Tamil namesake. The movie went on to become the biggest success in Bollywood multiplex era.

Asin Thottumkal belongs to a Syrian Christian family from Ernakulam in Kochi district, Kerala. Joseph Thotumkal, her father, managed several businesses and was considered a prominent entrepreneur. Her father became a pillar of strength when she was starting her acting career. Her mother, Seline Thottumkal is a surgeon.

Asin Thottumkal debuted in the world of films with a supporting role in Sathyan Anthikkad`s Malayalam film Narendran Makan Jayakanthan Vaka in 2001, at the age of 15. Asin Thottumkal returned with her breakthrough film as an actress, Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi opposite Ravi Teja, portraying the character of a Tamil girl in her first Telugu language film, which consequently fetched her Telugu Filmfare Award for Best Actress.

Asin Thottumkal also won the Santosham Best Actress Award for her performance along with Nagarjuna in her second Telugu film, Shivamani. She followed with two Telugu films, Lakshmi Narasimha and Gharshana, both the films portrayed Asin as the love interest for police officers, giving her two more solid hit films. Eventually, Asin Thottumkal was placed as a leading actress in the Telugu film industry.

Asin Thottumkal`s first Tamil language film was M. Kumaran son of Mahalakshmi, in which she shared the screen with Jayam Ravi. Asin Thottumkal reprised her role from her film Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi for the remake. The movie subsequently went on to become one of the biggest hits in Tamil cinema in the year 2004, introducing Asin Thottumkal to Tamil film industry. After a brief impact on Telugu films, to do Chakram, Asin Thottumkal`s first failure as a senior artiste and she appeared in Ullam Ketkumae.

After Ullam Ketkumae released, Asin Thottumkal became popular as a leading actress and thus signed many prominent films, opposite famous actors. The Tamil film, Ghajini was the turning point in Asin Thottumkal`s life. Directed by A. R. Murugadoss, this film helped Asin Thottumkal to secure the Tamil Filmfare Award for Best Actress. Lately, her performance of this film as a Hindi remake, opposite Amir Khan, brought her immense fame and popularity.

Ravikumar`s Dasavathaaram opposite Kamal Hassan, is considered to be another grand success in this actress`s career. Despite being overshadowed by Haasan`s ten roles, Asin`s portrayals in the film earned great reviews. One of her roles in this film was of a Vaishnavite in the 12th century; whilst the other character was a Brahmin girl from Chidambaram. Dasavathaaram consequently went on to become one of the biggest blockbusters in South Indian film history.

The photographers and directors admire Asin Thottumkal for her fresh look and photogenic face; however her brilliant acting ability cannot be undermined. Her performance has always earned a positive feedback. The upcoming project of Asin Thottumkal is Vipul Shah`s London Dreams, scheduled in 2009. She will be seen in this film alongside Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan, in which she plays a member of a five-troupe band.
