Lahori Gate is the main entrance of the Red Fort in Delhi. The gate is situated on the western side of the fort and it received its name because it led to the Lahore City in the Pakistan"s province of Punjab. Secondary gate of the fort is the Delhi gate. Lahori Gate was provided with a 10.5 meter high barbican by Aurangzeb with its entrance to the north. Since the Indian Independence Day in 1947, the national flag is hoisted and the Prime Minister gives a speech from the ramparts at the gate. In the year 1980, the tower windows of the gate have been blocked for security purposes.
Architecture of Lahori gate
Lahori Gate is a three storied structure with the decorations of square, rectangular and cusped arched panels. The panels are flanked by semi-octagonal towers, which are crowned with two open octagonal pavilions. The entire gate is made out of red sandstone except the roofs of the pavilions; those are of white stone. Between the pavilions, there is a screen of miniature chhatris with seven miniature marble domes.
