Born in February 1878, Varanattu Madhava Kurup was active in Mudiyettu enactments till he was 78, while also being familiar with its allied arts of Kalamezhuthum Pattum, Sopana Sangitham and the traditional vocal and percussion instruments used in the art. For his experience and achievements in Mudiyettu, he was recognised with several awards at the time, while also being conferred with the title Kali Kurup. Varanattu Madhava Kurup was married to late Vadakkini Marath Parukkutti Amma and their children, Varanattu Sankara Narayana Kurup and Varanattu Gopala Krishna Kurup, are also well recognised Mudiyettu artists of the contemporary times.
