A part of this season was held outside India after the former Home Minister of India Sushil Kumar Shinde denied the provision of security the league demanded as it would clash with the parliamentary elections. The tournament was hosted by India and the United Arab Emirates. The opening 20 matches were held in the UAE at three different stadiums in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah with the tournament returning to India on 2 May 2014.

The schedule of the first phase of the IPL 7 was announced on 19th March 2014. The first phase of the tournament consists of 20 matches played from 16th to 30th April 2014 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The opening match of the tournament was played between the defending champions Mumbai Indians and the Kolkata Knight Riders on 16 April 2014 at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi. From 2nd May onwards the 36 games of the regular season and the 4 playoffs was played in India across 10 venues. The first phase of Indian Premier League 2014 was at Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium, Dubai International Cricket Stadium and Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium and in the second phase Punjab Cricket Association Stadium, Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium, Jharkhand States Cricket Association International Cricket Stadium, Eden Gardens, Sardar Patel Stadium, Barabati Stadium, Wankhede Stadium, Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, M. Chinnaswamy Stadium and M. A. Chidambaram Stadium hosted the ten different matches. The final match was held in M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, where the Kolkata Knight Rider won by three wickets against Kings XI Punjab.

On 1st June 2014, the final match was held at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, between King XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders, where the Kolkata Knight Riders won by three wickets. The sparkling innings of Manish Pandey, 94 runs from 50 balls against Kings XI Punjab in the final was the triumphant innings of the match. The best batmen in this IPL7 are Robin Uthappa from Kolkata Knight Riders, Dwayne Smith from Chennai Super Kings, Glenn Maxwell from Kings XI Punjab, David Warner from Sunrisers Hyderabad and Suresh Raina from Chennai Super Kings. While most wickets are taken by new bowlers Mohit Sharma from Chennai Super Kings, Sunil Narine from Kolkata Knight Riders, Bhuvneshwar Kumar from Sunrisers Hyderabad, Ravindra Jadeja from Chennai Super Kings and Sandeep Sharma from Kings XI Punjab. Manish Pandey became the Player of the Match whereas Wriddhiman Saha, another Bengali cricketer took Kings XI Punjab to a most affordable position. Piyush Chawla and Karanveer Singh are the two bowlers, who are the game-changers of this final match.
