History The city is named after the Maharaja of Bikaner, Maharaja Ganga Singhji who established it. It is said that the Maharaja wanted a city based on the design of Paris to be established and hence the map of the old Ganganagar will give the glimpse of the map of Paris. Geography Sriganganagar is located at 29.92°N 73.88°E. It has an average elevation of 164meters. The climate of Ganganagar is very extreme. In summer the temperature goes up to 50°C, where as in winter the temperature also falls down to even 0°C. Economy Sriganganagar is based on agriculture. The main crops of this area are cotton, wheat and mustard. Kinnu a variant of Orange is very famous here. Demographics As per 2001 Census of India, Sriganganagar had a population of 210,788. Males constitute 55% and female constitute 45% of the total population. 13% of the population is coming under six year of age. The average literacy rate is 71%, which is higher than the national average of 59.5%. Male literacy rate is 76% and female literacy rate is 64%. Culture The principal language is Hindi and Rajasthani in Sriganganagar. The main religious festivals are Deepavali, Holi, Gangaur, Teej, Makar Sankranti and Janmashtami.Desert festival is the main festival of entire Rajasthan. Which held in winter of every year. Gogamedi Fair is an annual event organized in Sriganganagar district for the selling of crops, livestock and handicrafts. This festival also includes dancing and singing programmes. Gogamedi fair is organized in commemoration of a hero of the region popularly known as Goga Veer (among Hindus) and Jahar Peer (among Muslims). Gogaji is popular as snake god. It is believed that chanting his name can treat snakebite. There is a small village in the city called Anupgarh. This place is famous for the "Mazar of Laila Majnu".
