Mythological History of Gopinath Temple
According to a legendary account, the trident of Lord Shiva had got fixed at this very locale during the time when He had aimed it at Lord Kama Deva, in order to kill him. It is quite miraculous that this trident's metal has not corroded by the elements of nature. It is believed that though violent force is unable to move this divine trident even an inch, the mere touch of an honest devotee of Lord Shiva will be capable of creating a tremour in the trident.
Structure of Gopinath Temple
A majestic dome and a beautiful sanctum sanctorum measuring about 30 square feet are amongst the noticeable characteristics of the Gopinath Temple and can be approached by 24 doors. Visitors to this holy temple will come across the remnants of partially damaged idols near the temple, which bear testimony to the presence of some more temples existent since ancient periods beside Gopinath Temple. This temple also houses a trident in its courtyard which is about 5 meters in height and is composed of eight metals. It is said that this sacred trident is as ancient as the 12th century. The inscriptions present on the trident reveal that the temple exists here ever since the reign of Anekmalla, the ruler of Nepal during the 13th century. There are four other inscriptions which are written in the Devanagri script are also present here.
