Economy of Jalakandapuram
Jalakandapuram is well known for its weaving, especially sarees, which are distributed all over India. Weaving is mainly done by Devanga chettiyar. Handlooms and power looms are the main industry of the town. The industry is well equipped with modern textile machineries that produce a variety of products. The village also grows ragi, cotton and cornflowers. Dairy farms are also an important part of the economy of Jalakandapuram.
Pilgrimage Centres in Jalakandapuram
Jalakandapuram has few temples visited by devotees from different corners. Shri Om Kaliamman Temple is located at Kattampatti on the route to Salem. It is situated at a distance of almost 1.5 kilometres from the town bus station. Every year the temple celebrates the Kaliamman festival in the month of January. Devotees flock the temple during that time. Another noteworthy shrine of Jalakandapuram is Ramalinga Sowdesweri Amman Temple. It is dedicated to Maha Shakthi Soundamman. In June 2007 a Maha Kumbhabhishekam was organised in the temple. The Kalyana Subramaniya Swamy Temple is also located in the town. It is dedicated to Lord Muruga. There are three temples dedicated to goddess Soundamman and to goddess Mariamman respectively. A temple of Lord Shiva owned by the family of Malayampalayam Kannada Devanger and another temples dedicated to Lord Hanuman have also been built in Jalakandapuram.
The town celebrates few festivals such as Ramalinga Sowdesweri Amman festival, Mariamman festivals organised in the month of March and April and Soorasamharam festival held in November. There are two lakes in the town. One is near to Soundamman temple and the other adjacent to Kaliamman temple.
