Bimala Prasad Chaliha was a reputed Indian political leader and one of the foremost members of the Indian National Congress Party. He also served as the Chief Minister of the state of Assam, India. He served in office from 28 December 1957 to 6 November 1970. Bimala Prasad Chaliha was honoured with the Padma Vibhushan, which is the 2nd highest civilian award in the Republic of India, in the year 1971 by the Government of India. Bimala Prasad was born on 26 March 1912.
After he was appointed as the Chief Minister of Assam, the Assam Official Language Act was enacted in the year 1960. This act made Assamese language the only official language of the state. During the tenure of Bimala Prasad Chaliha as the Chief Minister of Assam, the March 1966 Mizo National Front uprising also occurred in the state.
Bimala Prasad Chaliha died on 25 February 1971.
