A noble King Nanda had performed Yagnya and seeked God's blessings. Thus it is named after him. There is another legend that is attached to it. The other version is that the confluence derives its name from the Yadava king Nanda who is the step-father of Lord Krishna. Lord Vishnu granted a boon of the birth of a son to Nanda and his wife Yashoda. He granted the same boon to Devaki who is the wife of Vasudeva.
