The Filmfare Award for Best Art Direction is presented by Filmfare in its annual Filmfare Awards, to the production designer and art director who with the Art Department team, design and develop the most striking visual artistry for a Hindi film of the preceding year. Such artistry renders the overall look of the film and its sequences to the viewers and is conceptualised, crafted and finalised in accordance with the film’s theme and background and the emotions involved in its scenes. The category was introduced in 1956, two years after the inception of awards.
Prominent Records in Filmfare Award for Best Art Direction
Noted art directors Shanti Das, Ajit Banerjee, M. R. Acharekar, Nitin Chandrakant Desai, Sharmishta Roy, Bansi Chandragupta and Sudhendu Roy have won the Filmfare Award for Best Art Direction for most number of times, holding 3 wins each. Other art directors Sabu Cyril, Samir Chanda, Ravi Verman, S. S. Samel, N. B. Kulkarni, Madhukar Shinde and T. K. Desai have won the award twice each.
Filmfare Award for Best Art Direction at 61st Filmfare Awards
In the 61st Filmfare Awards of 2016, the film ‘Bajirao Mastani’ bagged the Filmfare Award for Best Art Direction for its much resplendent and magnificent sets and visual backgrounds. Sujeet Sawant, Sriram Iyengar and Saloni Dhatrak were presented the award for making ‘Bajirao Mastani’ a visual spectacle with their production designs.
