The Filmfare Award for Best Special Effects is presented by Filmfare in its annual Filmfare Awards, recognising the Hindi film of the preceding year which has the most impressive and arresting visual effects. It was introduced in the year 2007, nominating 3 films of 2006, namely ‘Don: The Chase Begins Again’, ‘Dhoom 2’ & ‘Krrish’, for their visual effects. The award was presented to the movie ‘Krrish’, the second science fiction superhero film of the Krrish series (‘Koi... Mil Gaya’, ‘Krrish’ and ‘Krrish 3’) produced and directed by Rakesh Roshan, for its eye-catchy and accurate visual effects that were designed and developed by Indian firm Prasad EFX in collaboration with Hollywood’s Marc Kolbe and Craig Mumma. The visual effects incorporated comprised sophisticated 3D modelling and computer animation, including whole body scans, 3D replicas of vehicles, fire sequences, complicated wire removals and compositing work. Over 1,200 VFX shots were prepared, accounting for approximately 90 minutes of the film’s total screen time. The effects were of never before seen kind in Indian cinema at par with those seen in Hollywood movies, which made ‘Krrish’ a trendsetter film of global significance.
Red Chillies VFX studio only has won the Filmfare Award for Best Special Effects twice, for ‘Om Shanti Om’ in 2008 and ‘Ra.One’ in 2012.
