Alternanthera pungens is a branched and prostrate herb. The leaves are broadly ovate, elliptic or oblanceolate. The leaves are three to six centimeters long and two to eight centimeters wide. The flowers of alternanthera pungens have spiny bracts and bracteoles and are born in axillary and terminal heads.
The native land of alternanthera pungens is the tropical America and now is pantropical. This plant is found as a weed in dry, open habitats such as roadsides and wastelands, usually on sandy, rocky soils in India.
Alternanthera pungens is a plant that owns diuretic properties. Its decoction is reportedly taken to treat gonorrhoea.
