Dhritiman Chatterjee is an Indian actor, who began his acting career in 1970 as the central character of Satyajit Ray's Pratidwandi (The Adversary). His performance in this film was incomparable and was recognized by the critics widely. Most of Dhritiman Chatterjee's acting work has been seen in the India's "parallel", or independent, cinema with filmmakers like Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen and Aparna Sen among others. He is also a familiar name in English language films with well-known filmmakers such as Jane Campion. Dhritiman Chatterjee has received a number of acting awards in India and
has also been in the Jury panel of the Indian National film Awards.
Born on May 30, 1945, Dhritiman Chatterjee was educated at Kolkata St Xavier's Collegiate School and Presidency College, and later in the Delhi School of Economics. Dhritiman Chatterjee pursues a parallel career in the sector of advertising, documentary filmmaking and social communications. He has hardly worked in mainstream Bollywood films. Despite his limited Filmography, Dhritiman Chatterjee has astonished everyone with his spellbinding performance in each of the films. In recent years he is likely to work with filmmakers as diverse as Jane Campion and also the Mumbai based directors like Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Mani Ratnam.
This genuine actor was actually known as Sundar Chaterji, but on the advice of Satyajit Ray, he changed his name to Dhritiman Chatterjee as his screen name. He is quite active on the English stage in Chennai.
