Chandogya Upanishad is associated with the Kauthuma Shakha of the Sama Veda. It is part of the Chandogya Brahmana, which has ten chapters. The Chandogya Upanishad comprises of eight chapters, and commences on the Om Mantra. The 2nd Khanda of Chapter Seven of Chandogya Upanishad describes the speech as Brahman. Narada went to Sanatkumara to gather knowledge about the real Self or the Supreme Brahman. Narada wished to know what was greater than a name. Sanatkumara told him that the speech was greater than a name.
Speech helps one to understand the Rig Veda, the Yajur Veda, the Sama Veda, the Atharva Veda, the epics and the ancient lore , the Veda of the Vedas i.e. the grammar, the rules of sacrifices by which the Manes are gratified, the science of numbers, the science of portents, the science of time, logic, ethics, etymology, Brahma vidya, the science of elemental spirits, archery, astronomy, the science of serpents and the fine arts, as well as heaven, earth, air, akasa, water, fire, gods, men, cattle, birds, herbs, trees, animals, together with worms, flies and ants, also truth, untruth, propriety, impropriety, gratefulness, and ungratefulness, pleasant and the unpleasant. If there were no speech, no one would ever know about either righteousness or unrighteousness or about the truth and the false. One would never understand about the pleasant and the unpleasant without the aid of speech. Thus, through speech everything becomes understandable. Hence, all should meditate upon speech. One who meditates upon speech as the Supreme Brahman frees himself and is able to reach as far as speech reaches.
