In the Puranas, Mayadevi is said to be the wife of the Asura Sambara. Sambara rescued Pradyumna when he was thrown into the sea as an infant, and was swallowed by a fish. Mayadevi had deceived Sambara for the purpose of protecting and rearing Pradyumna to whom she was afterwards married. Later Mayadevi returned with Pradyumna to Dwaraka to the great joy of Rukmini and Krishna.
