Ernakulum district was formed on 1st April 1958 by the two princely states of Travancore and Cochin and the British Malabar. Major portion of the district is from the Kochi kingdom. The other areas, which altogether comprises the Ernakulum district are as follows: the mainland Ernakulam, the man made Willington Island, Mattanchery, Fort Kochi, the Vypeen Island which is world's most populous area, Bolghatty Palace etc. Kochi is the most modern city of Kerala where the best shopping, markets and bazars are located that's why this place is called the commercial capital of Kerala.
From the ancient time Arabs, Chinese, Dutch, British and Portuguese mariners followed the sea route to Kochi and left their impressions in the town. The Chinese fishing nets, believed to be set up in 1350 AD, swaying in the breeze over backwaters, the Jewish Synagogue, Dutch Palace, Portuguese Architecture, Bolghatty Palace etc. are some the places which enrich the heritage of Kerala.
