Chandogya Upanishad is the part of Chandogya Brahaman and is associated with Sama Veda. It is ranked ninth in the Muktika canon of hundred and eight Upanishadas. The Chandogya Upanishad depicts the importance and greatness of universal holy syllable `Om Mantra` and the significance of vital life force or `Prana`. The 16th Khanda of Chapter Four of Chandogya Upanishad states about the silence of the Brahma priest. According to this, one that moves along in the air is the sacrifice. While moving along he purifies everything hence he is known sacrifice. The mind and speech are the two ways of that sacrifice. Of the two paths the first path is purified by Brahma priest through his mind. The second i.e. speech is purified by the words of the Hotri priest, the Adhavaryu priest and the Udgata priest. If the Brahma priest breaks his silence before the beginning of the Prataranuvaka hymn and the beginning of the recitation of the Paridhaniya hymn, he then purifies only one of the ways i.e. speech. The second i.e. the mind remains injured. Like a man walking on one leg, or a carriage going on one wheel, is injured in the same way the sacrifice is also injured. The sacrificer is also injured here and by performing the flawed sacrifice he becomes more sinful. On the other hand if the Brahma priest does not break his silence, after the Prataranuvaka hymn has begun and before the recitation of the Paridhaniya, he purifies both the ways. Neither of them remains injured. The sacrifice is free from all obstacles like a man walking on two legs or a carriage going on two wheels. As the sacrifice becomes a success the sacrifice also fares well. The sacrificer becomes better having performed the sacrifice.
