Formerly Thana, Thane is a city in Maharashtra, part of the Mumbai Conurbation (comprising the six urban areas around Mumbai-Thane, Navi Mumbai, Mira-Bhayandar, Kalyan-Dombivali, Ulhasnagar and Bhiwandi-Nizampur). The town is in the northeast of Mumbai at the head of the Thane Creek and is almost submerged in Mulund, a suburb of Mumbai with a mere narrow road dividing both cities. It is the administrative headquarters of Thane District. Thane comprises of 13 `talukas`. The southern talukas are the residences of urban Indians, while Kolis, Marathis and Gujratis mostly populate the western coastal region. The northern and eastern talukas are populated by the Warli tribes, known for making remarkable images from red mud on house walls.
