The birth of a new child brings with it the desire to buy clothes and toys for the new born. In India the tradition of making clothes at home for the child is very old. Even before the child is born the expecting mother begins to make socks made of wool if the child is due to born in winter season. Generally small babies need more clothes and so zablas and loose clothing are preferred during summer season. Clothes for boys in India are very also popular but they are distinct regionally and also according to states. Casual clothing is very comfortable clothing. So boys generally wear loose pajamas, trousers, slacks, quarter pants, T-shirts, Shirts. In rural parts of India boys generally wear loose Dhoti-Pajamas, loose lehengas and Zablas. Traditional clothing is also very famous kind of clothing in India.
Even young Indian girls wear skirts and dresses, particularly to schools, but after adolescence, and almost certainly after marriage, girls are expected to wear traditional Indian clothing. This trend is changing with more females entering the urban work force, but this is confined to sections of society that are highly exposed to international lifestyles. Thus, clothing in India vary according to region, state and even to the lifestyle and the family environment they are brought up in.
Costume For Infants / Toddlers:
The costumes for toddlers are of varied types. Normally babies who are of 2 to 3 months are generally wrapped in a zippered garment. Baby clothes are available in neutral colors and younger designs in India and they are of stretchy fabrics where clothes have large head openings. Overall in India generally babies and toddlers are made to wear clothing like pajamas, zablas, track suit, sleep suits and zippered clothing.
Pajamas: Pajamas can be defined as a loose-fitting garment consisting of trousers and a jacket, worn for sleeping or lounging. Children and adults wear them alike, although children seem to prefer them. The wearing of pyjamas by adults is sometimes seasonal; e.g., only in winter time. The word "pajama" came by the way of the Hindi word pajama, originally from the Persian words Payjama meaning "leg garment. "Pajamas are very popular among toddlers and with babies since they are comforable and do not give a fussy kind of feeling. The Toddler`s Pajamas are designed for lightweight woven fabrics.
Socks: Baby socks are available in different colours and these socks enhance the personality of a child. Socks are of ankle length or are of full length. Other socks are toe socks, or loose socks. Socks are purely a comfort zone for both the toddlers and infants (boys and girls). Socks usually blend with the out fit for toddlers. Nowadays, stockings which is usually worn by toddlers during a fancy dress competition.
Costume for Boys:
Indian boys wear sherwani, Kurta-Pajama during weddings or for pooja. They also wear traditional dress like dhoti -pajama during Dandiya-Ras and other festivals like Diwali. Regional clothing is also very famous in India. The most common garment worn by boys in Kerala is the "dhoti" or a kind of short skirt, although some might wear longer lengths. In southern India, boys prefer lungis to pants. So boys normally in India dress up according to their style, comfort. Regionally there may be a particular dress code, which they would be following but it varies according to where they belong.
Kurta Pajama: Most boys prefer comfortable attire. Kurta and Lehenga are the type of attire that can be worn on occassions like pooja, marriages and other relevant occassions. Today some boys wear kurta and jeans rather than any other attire. A kurta is a traditional piece of clothing comprising of a long shirt, usually worn knee length. It is worn over salwar drawstring trousers formally known as lehenga in Hindi. Wearing this is out fit is a trendy and gives a stylish look and is considered by some boys as an in thing of today.
Sherwani: Sherwani means a coat-like garment buttoned in the front, which reaches down to the knees, or lower. Usually has embroidery or some other type of work on it. Worn by boys at weddings and other formal parties. Sherwani is a long coat-like garment worn, very similar to an achkan. It is worn over the Shalwar Kameez. This sherwani coat fits close to the body, fastened in the front with buttons, and extends to slightly below knee-length. Sherwanis are usually embroidered or detailed in some way. Sherwani looks good on boys as it is comfortable and looks elegant on them which is usually worn during weddings and wedding parties.
Costumes for Girls:
The traditional dress for girls in Rajasthan and Gujarat is the lehenga choli or ghagra choli. These cholis are brightly embroidered, waist-length barebacked blouses. Young girls in south India wear a half saree, somewhat similar to a lehenga choli. The only difference is that the dupatta is wound across the waist and draped across the left shoulder like the saree pallu. Popular, comfortable and convenient dress is the salwar kameez or churidar kurta. This was traditionally the dress worn in Punjab, but is now worn almost everywhere, particularly by girls.
Choli-Sharara: Many diverse cultures had an deep impact on Indian clothing. The Mughal had a great impact on Indian society. Their dress pattern was one of the richest art forms. The pallu of the sari is often made with extra length. This is meant to be cut off and made into a midriff-baring blouse called a choli. This is commonly worn under the sari in India. Many styles are used today, including halter, open backed and closed backed. They can be embellished with embroidery and beadwork to suit personal taste or traditional style. The heads were always covered with the Dupatta, which was both a mark of respect and honor.
In the modern world of fashion, designer Indian sharara is essentially a wedding dress for the ladies. Girls accompanying the bride throughout her wedding need something special too. Shararas are available in different fabrics like georgette sharara, satin sharara etc. Some popular designs of shararas are rich Zardosi Sharara cholis, Bright Yellow choli Sharara, Resham Work Choli Sharara, Crush Tissue Choli Sharara, Mirror Work Choli Sharara. Designer sharara is a hot outfit, which is new into the fashion. Choli-Sharara looks good on teenage females as well but complement with their personality quite well.
Chaniya-Choli: Chaniya Choli: Chaniya Choli is traditional attire that is worn by woman during festivals especially during dandiya ras. Chaniya choli is generally heavy or are of lightweight. Chaniya choli may have traditional designs like handwork, different embroidery designs, abla work. A blouse, which is known as choli also, has different designs and they available in different styles and cuts. The chooni or the draping cloth has a heavy work of kodi and abla a fusion of two, which blends extremely well and looks elegant when worn during traditional festivals.
Not only the attire but also the ornaments like kamar patta, long earings, kadda, Jhangar, Bangles, and Long mala worn can give a very dramatic and more traditional look. Young girls love to wear chaniya choli as much as any other out fit. The beauty of the chaniya-choli lies in the two separate parts of the garment. While he chaniya or skirt is flowing and flares around the wearer the choli or blouse is a snugly fitted piece of clothing that accentuates the female form. The odhni, the third part of the total garment, acts as a scarf or covering for the head and body and is a sign of modest shyness for the wearer.
Salwar Kameez: Salwar kameez is the traditional dress worn by various peoples of south - central Asia. Salwar are sort of loose pyjama-like trousers. The legs are wide at the top, and narrow at the bottom. The legs are pleated or gathered into a waistband. There is a drawstring at the top of the waistband to hold up the salwar. The kameez is a long shirt or tunic. The side seams (known as the chaak) are left open below the navel, which gives the wearer greater freedom of movement. The kameez is usually cut straight and flat; older kameez use traditional cuts.
When girls wear the salwar kameez, they usually wear a long scarf or shawl called a dupatta around the head or neck. Salwar Kameez simply looks elegant on girls. It is the called in one sense as the queen of Indian dresses. Salwar Kameez is the dress, which is preferred by all Indian girls. It is tendency seen where fat females generally prefer to wear salwar kameez as they find themselves very comfortable in them.
