The oldest and the most overpoweringly built monastery, the Lamayuru Monastery is located about 125km from Leh, to the west. It was constructed during the Mahasiddha Naropa graced this place with his sacred presence. During the Mahasiddha`s stay in Lamayuru, Rinchen Zangpo translator came to this site and had built quite a few temples and stupas, when the teaching of the Kadampa School came into vogue. Later, Jamyang Namgyal offered his teachings to Chosje Danma and Digung Kargyut School was introduced and named Yungdrung Therpalling. The Yungdrung Kabgyad festival is held on the 28th and 29th of the 2nd Tibetan month.
