She is versatile because she not only sings for films and Indipop, but also renders Indian Classical and Western Pop songs beautifully, besides Folk and Fusion. Her live stints in India and abroad have proved her vocal strength" -- Record, June 2001. Hema Sardesai is another successful name of Indian playback singing. She stays in Goa but she was born in Mumbai. At the age of six, Hema`s talent started branching out. She made her stage debut at just the age of eight. Then onwards, she started winning possibly all the singing contests no matter what the contest was- at the inter-state, national or international level, whatever the language was- English, Hindi, Marathi or whether the genre was Indian Classical, Light Indian Classical, Hindi film music, Western Pop music, or Spiritual Folk.

Today, Hema Sardesai has sung for more than 60 Bollywood films. She has also released many Indipop albums to her credit. She is regarded as the only Indian singer who has won the Grand Prix at the 16th International Pop Song Festival in Germany. She also earned the honour of being chosen to perform at the celebrations for the 50th year of Indian Independence other than the legendary Lata Mangeshkar.

Hema Sardesai started perusing her career in playback singing from the year 1989. She made her debut with the film Goonj, singing for actress Juhi Chawla. Afterwards, she sang for many celebrated actresses like, Manisha Koirala, Urmila Matondkar, Karisma Kapoor, Raveena Tandon, Tabbu, Kajol, Preity Zinta, Sushmita Sen and Kareena Kapoor. Hema has worked with renowened music directors like, Anu Malik, A R Rahman, Rajesh Roshan, Nadeem-Shravan, Vishal Bhardwaj and Pritam. Winning the Grand Prix proved to be the first milestone of her career. And she became a distinguished face for stage. She has performed in many concerts in countries like, USA, UK, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Holland, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji Islands, West Indies, Thailand, Nepal, Indonesia and so on.

Her performances as a playback singer has received acclaimation throughout. Some of her songs are- Awaara Bhavaren (from the film Sapnay, 1997), Sona Sona Ye Na Hona (from the film Soldier, 1998), Sar Sar Hawa Hai (from the film Daman, 2001), Kitne Kisse Hain (from the film Astitva, 2001), Hai Re Hai Re (from the film Khushi, 2003), Sun Suniyo (from the film Musafir, 2004), the title track of the film Asambhav (2005). The Times of India once wrote about her that `Hema Sardesai hit an all time high with Aawara Bhavaren`. A few albums which did exceedingly well on the charts, followed soon enough. Hema has always been someone who needs to have her share of fun. She wants to concentrate on being the Indian girl who can seek both critical and commercial acclaim simultaneously. After all with a debut like `Hindustani Gudiya` everybody would have expected that.

Hema Sardesai has also bagged the honour of accompanying in singing duets with four superstars like, Amitabh Bachchan (for the film Baghban), Naseeruddin Shah (for the film Asambhav), Govinda (for the film Hum Do Hamara Do) and Shahrukh Khan (for the film Josh). Some famous songs sung by Hema are- Ishq Chandi hai from the film Biwi No.1; Jaanam Samjha Karo from the film Jaanam Samjha Karo; Apun Bola from the film Josh; Jungle Hai Aadhi Raat Hai from the film Biwi No.1; Sona Sona Ye Na Hona from the film Soldier; Tere Pyaar Mein from the film Zor; Mein Kudi Anjaani Ho from the film Zor; Awaara Bhavaren from the film Sapnay; Hulle Hulle from the film Aar Ya Paar; Hai Re Hai Re from the film Khushi; Kehna Hai Tumse Kehna from the film Mann; Naach meri Jaan from the film Mujhe Meri Biwi Se Bachao; Na Heera Na Moti from the film Kunwara; Eli Re Eli from the film Yaadein; Tere Sang Ek Simple Si Coffee from the film Zameen; O Maria from the film Josh; Chali Chali Phir Chali Chali from the film Baghban; Khalli Valli from the film Market; Qayamat Qayamat from the film Qayamat; Asambhav from the film Asambhav; Chori Chori from the film Garam Masala.

Hema Sardesai song Qayamat Hema Sardesai has obtained the prestigious Sangeet Visharad degree in Indian Classical music. Side by side she did not stop nurturing her passion for Western Pop music. Apart from winning the Grand Prix in the 16th International Pop Song Festival `89, she was also conferred the title, `Audience Darling Prize`. The German Media named her, `Indian Nightingale`. For her pop album `Hindustani Gudiya` she was nominated `Best Indian Female Pop Album` at the ZEE MUSIC AWARDS, 2002. For her song `Hai Re Hai Re` from the film `Khushi`, she was selected as the `Best Female Playback Singer`. The award was given to her by the Afternoon Newspaper Polls, in 2003. She was nominated in the category of `Best Female Playback Singer` for her song `Qayamat ` from the film `Qayamat`, at the MTV IMMIES Awards, 2004. Acknowledging her contribution, the All India Woman`s Conference conferred her the `Gomant Tejaswini Award` in the year 2006. This award is presented every 4th year to the most deserving female International achiever.

Some social achievements by Hema Sardesai can be counted like- her performing for numerous charitable functions at the Aids Concert, (Wizcraft), Chowpatty - Mumbai; Kargil Soldiers fund, for `Mukti` - Mumbai; National Festival of Music and Dance, for the persons with mental retardation - Hyderabad; Concert For Lathur earthquake victims -Mumbai; The MTV concerts for AIDS Awareness in Mumbai, for three consecutive years; Journalists Nite - Goa; Tsunami Concert - Sony TV; Art of Living, Kullu Shibir - Kullu. She has also delineated India at the International UNICEF concert in Yugoslavia. Hema took up the social cause of `The Save Goa` campaign in March 2007, and for that noble gesture, she organised many concerts at several public gatherings and exhibitions across Goa. For these kinds of services, the newspaper `O Heraldo` named her as `The Great Goan Woman`.Hema Sardesai  modern spiritual songs titled JHOOM Another social achievement by her was releasing an album of modern spiritual songs, titled `JHOOM`. The songs in this album have been entirely sung, written and composed by Hema. The album is a dedication towards her beloved Guruji, `Shri Shri Ravishankar`s` Art of Living Foundation. At the International Woman`s Conference in Bangalore, Sardesai was conferred the International Woman Achievers Award `Vishalakshi`. Another album `Power Of Life` has been especially compiled by Hema for the occasion, describing ``Save the Girl Child`` and ``Global Warming". When sung by Hema live, the above-mentioned songs were adored by one and all and encore after encore followed.

In November 2001, Coca Cola pronounced Hema as "THE QUEEN OF INDIPOP". Today in India, Hema Sardesai is reckoned as the only youngest most successful female singer in predominately all genres of music such as, playback, pop and spiritual as well as folk and western music including Indian classical music.
