Situated in the Nuapada district of the state of Orissa , Khariar is an example of a town and also a notified area .

A multitude of towns and cities have thronged in each and every state of Indian subcontinent. In the state of Khariar too one finds no dearth of cities and towns. Amongst them, the name of Khariar is noteworthy. It is `a town and a notified area committee`. Khariar is located in the district of Nuapada of the state of Orissa.

As it has been pointed out Khariar has been regarded to be quite backward. Since this town falls under the `rain shadow belt` it is deprived of getting rainfall, which is sufficient enough for producing good quality crops.

Strategically, Khariar has been situated in the western portion of Orissa state, lying in close vicinity of the district of Raipur of another state of India, namely Chattisgarh. The Khariar residents enjoy tropical climate where rainfall occurs under the impact of South West monsoon.

The Census report of India that has been issued forth in the year 2001 throws some light about the demographical scenario of this Khariar town as well. As far as the population is concerned it has showed a count of 13,402. Out of it, male populace comprises of 51 percent while the populace of female is 49 percent. The children who are residing in the heartland of Khariar constitutes of 13 percent of the population. All of them are below six years of age.

Literacy rate acts as valid information about the town of Khariar. In fact it has got an average literacy rate of 62 percent, which is even higher than that of India. 59.5 percent is the average literacy rate of India. From it derivation also has been made about the male and female literacy rate and that too on individual basis. Male literacy constitutes of 72 percent. Rate of female literacy is lower than that of males, constituting 52 percent.
