Fresco is a style of painting that another landmark in Indian art that is basically done on a wet surface, firstly a smooth batter of limestone mixture was applied over the stones, in a matter of three to four days painting was done on that surface. Chola frescoes were discovered underneath the paintings of the Nayak period. They had an element of shaivism in them.
Equally famous are the frescoes and sculptures in the cave temples of Ellora and Elephanta which probably were built later than the ones in Ajanta. These frescoes and sculptures hark back to Hindu tales and metaphors and in style they evolve from the earlier Ajanta styles. There is an unique quality in the depiction of the eyes in the Ajanta fresco. The eyes of the princess, kings and celestial gods are of meditative nature to depict the sublime look of grace and compassion, the eyes of the beggars are `soothing` but has an element of pain and suffering.
