Women Writers in Modern Tamil Literature

Women Writers in Modern Tamil Literature have written several short stories and novels that depict the internal conflicts of women, particularly related to the culture and traditions of Tamil Nadu. The various works of women writers also portray the problems related to family, affection for children and other minor aspects of life and accomplished fame. The subject matter or the theme of the short stories and novels written by women writers in modern Tamil literature primarily deal with delicate issues like the alteration in dull and routine life, the social discriminations and the consequential problems. Their writings and works usually do not represent or discuss major social issues or revolutionary themes. Such themes and subject matters are portrayed with remarkable ease and in a fascinating manner.

Kotainayaki Ammaiyar is perhaps the most well known female Tamil author who wrote numerous novels and also edited a Tamil magazine. Later a number of other women writers emerged in the scene and have proved their skills in the art of creative writing. Kurincitten, one of Rajamkirusnan`s famous novels, is based on the several experiences of her personal life. Eminent authors, like, Vacumati Ramacami (Basumati Ramaswamy) and Cutamani have also created some notable short stories and novels as well. Cutamani illustrates the oscillations of the mind through her psychological short stories. Cotanaiyin Mutivu is one of the most prominent novels of the author and is considered noteworthy for its content and simple presentation. Caroja Ramamurtti or Saroja Ramamurthi is especially skilled in portraying the tales of the housewives and family woman in her short stories. The manner of depicting children in her stories has enthralled the readers. Her smooth and lucid style is appropriate for narrating the fundamental culture of the region. Other than stories, Caroja Ramamurtti has also written some Tamil novels, such as Muttuccippi, Paniltuli and Latcivavatam.

Ampujam, also known as Kirusna wrote many novels which includes Matukkinnam and Raji. Vimalaramani composed both for grown ups and children. The novels of Kuyili Rakjesvari like Teyvam Cirittatu and Unarnta Nencam are composed with noble objectives. Other women writers in modern Tamil literature like Anuttama, K. Cavittiri (K. Savithri) and K. Carasvati (K. Saraswati) have written several Tamil short stories that replicate the basic culture of family life in the Tamil country. Most of the stories of these authors comprises of an artistic form.

Komakal is another renowned female Tamil author who is much admired for her enthusiasm for incorporating new themes and subject matters in her literary works. Talvurra Nencam, a Tamil novel by the woman author K. Jeyalatcumi depicts the changes in the circumstances in the life of a particular family. Maturam, popularly known as Kiruttika, also composed many Tamil novels that belonged to same category. Her writings shine in portraying the working of the inner mind. Ponkuntu and Pukainatuvil are two of the most famous Tamil novels written by the Kiruttika, who is one of the most prominent women writers in modern Tamil literature.
