Velayuta Mudaliar

Velayuta Mudaliar, also popularly renowned as Toluvur Velayuta Mudaliar, was a poet and scholar from the Tamil country who lived from the year 1832 to 1889. The well known poet Toluvur Velayuta Mudaliar was a follower and disciple of the great Tamil poet saint Ramalinkar Cuvamikal or Ramalinkar Adigal who belonged to the line of saints known as Gnana Siddhars. Ramalinkar Cuvamikal was one of the most respected Tamil poet saints of the 19th century. The Suddha Sanmarga Sangam propagated by Ramalinkar Cuvamikal had inspired his numerous disciples including Velayuta Mudaliar.

Toluvur Velayuta Mudaliar composed several Tamil literary works including works on prose and poetry. The poet promulgated the greatness of the Tamil poetical work of Arutpti, which was composed by Ramalinkar Cuvamikal, amongst the people of the Tamil country. Velayuta Mudaliar was also a great scholar in Sanskrit language and translated the Paracara Smiruti into Tamil prose. He also provided the prose versions of the Markkanteya Puranam and the Periya Puranam. Toluvur Velayuta Mudaliar composed a total of twenty four poetical works and some biographies in Tamil language.
