Vasundhara Tiwari Broota was born in 1955 in Kolkata. She completed her Literature at the University of Delhi and Fine Art at the Triveni Kala Sangam in New Delhi. She has had solo exhibitions in Chicago, USA. Her work has been included in several group exhibitions including `Woman Artists of India: the N.G.M.A. Collection`, shown in Poland and Bulgaria in 1988, the Exhibition of Contemporary Indian Art in Tokyo, 1984
She worked on a Cultural Scholarship awarded by the department of Culture, Government of India.
Vasundhara drew attention for her sensitive mixed media work in which she interpreted the female nude as an image of the Indian womanhood suffering, searching and aspiring for independent individuality. Tensions arising out of the naturalistically modeled figures and the flat pictorial space characterize her paintings. Her earlier works emphasize the dream like conditions where she has constantly painted female nude body and imaginary landscapes. Her application of layers of acrylic and oil on the canvas create varied textures suggesting multiple meanings. Vasundhara depicts these two worlds - inner and outer or the real and the dreamland - this juxtaposition and the transition from one to the other creates a depth. Her images surface out of the perception of a woman and the psycho-political existence of the female body.
In her recent works a sensibility towards understanding of the internal and external psychological spaces of the artist is displayed clearly. The human figure shares equivocal space with the background objects where both are equally significant. Her paintings are a celebration of a contemporary woman who fearlessly reveal her soul and simultaneously participate in the daily life-patterns freely.
Between 1980 and `94 Vasundhara had seven solo shows in New Delhi, Chicago, Kolkata and Mumbai. Between 1984 and 1993, she participated in 24 important national and international exhibitions which included Contemporary Indian Art. `The Girl Child`, Maurya Sheraton, New Delhi (1991).`Looking for tree of Life: Journey torsion Contemporary Art` at The Museum of Modem Art, Saitama (1992), and in the T.A.I.S., Tokyo (1992-93) In 1992, co- directed with Rameshwar Broota the video film titles `Shabash Bete` screened at Oberhausen Short Film Festival, Germany 1992). Since 1979 she has been regularly taking part in all the major exhibitions organized by the Lalit Kala Akademi. All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society and the Sahitya Kala Parishad, Delhi. Vasundhara got awards for her drawings in the All India Drawing Exhibition at the Chandigarh Museum in 1981 and`85. She won award at the Annual Exhibition of Art, AIFACS (1981) and got the Delhi State Award from the Sahitya Kala Parishad (1982), Sanskrit Award, New Delhi (1987) Silver medal at the First International Biennial of Plastic Arts, Algiers (1987) second and third time the Delhi State Award, Sahitya Kala Parishad (1987- 1992) and during 1988-90.
